Since 1 July 2024, selected areas of Hardenbergplatz have been opened up as temporary event spaces for the general public, as well as for organisations, institutions, event organisers and local businesses. The Pre-Test phase will run until September 2024.

The official kick-off to the Pre-Test was the event FUTURE NARRATIVES – Smart City, hosted by the HAD project team in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) and the industry association Extended Reality Berlin-Brandenburg (XRBB).
At the event, INSEL-PROJEKT.BERLIN GmbH, the project’s lead coordinator, presented the SMART SPACE Hardenbergplatz pilot project, its subcomponents, and current planning status to a professional audience and members of the interested public.
Following the presentation, Tim Deussen (Studio Deussen) guided participants through the digital twin of Hardenbergplatz developed for the project. The 3D application allows users to explore different spatial configurations and simulate their impact on users and the site as a whole.
In the future, this tool will help simplify planning processes, analyse mobility patterns, and support data-driven improvements to last-mile connectivity at Hardenbergplatz.
The event also served as a practical test for using the square in front of Zoologischer Garten station as an event space - providing the project team with additional insights to further refine the Pre-Test and its subprojects.

The day before the event, three TinySpaces -mobile tiny homes - were installed along the curbside. These will remain in place throughout the Pre-Test and can be booked individually or as part of scheduled events. They function as mobile workspaces, meeting rooms, or breakout zones for participants and organisers.
